What Leadership During Challenging Times ™ Teaches

Leadership During Challenging Times is a practical leadership development training that helps managers understand how they respond under pressure and how their leadership style affects team trust, morale, communication, and decision-making during crisis. The training begins by helping participants reflect on the real pressures they are facing and how those pressures impact four key leadership areas: infrastructure, relationships, communication, and mission/vision/direction.

Participants then explore four common leadership approaches that often show up during difficult times: The Enforcer, The Compromiser, The Negotiator, and The Strategist. For each style, leaders examine the strengths, limitations, and real-world impacts of that approach during crisis. The training is designed to help leaders become more intentional, flexible, and responsive rather than relying only on instinct or habit.

Through reflection, discussion, and scenario-based conversation, participants leave with a clearer understanding of how to lead with more balance, when to hold firm, when to collaborate, and how to better support the people they manage during high-pressure moments.

Pillar 1: Understanding Crisis Impact

Leaders reflect on the specific crises they are facing and how those challenges affect infrastructure, relationships, communication, and organizational direction.

Pillar 2: Leadership Style Awareness

Participants identify and examine four crisis leadership styles — Enforcer, Compromiser, Negotiator, and Strategist — and explore how each style shapes decision-making and team experience.

Pillar 3: Adaptive Leadership in Practice

Participants reflect on which styles they are most and least comfortable using, and consider which leadership approaches they may need to strengthen in order to better support their teams during difficult times.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify how crisis impacts leadership across infrastructure, relationships, communication, and mission/vision.

  2. Recognize their default leadership tendencies during stressful or high-pressure situations.

  3. Distinguish between the four leadership styles commonly used during challenging times: Enforcer, Compromiser, Negotiator, and Strategist.

  4. Evaluate when each leadership style may help or hinder team effectiveness, trust, and morale.

  5. Reflect on how their leadership choices impact the adults or teams they manage during times of crisis.

  6. Practice choosing a more intentional leadership response based on the needs of the moment rather than reacting automatically.
